Reedy Creek Nature Center & Nature Preserve

The Reedy Creek Nature Center & Nature Preserve is a 927-acre habitat located within the Reedy Creek Park. Visitors have the opportunity to check out the preserved nature, such as small lakes and wildlife, or participate in outdoor activities, such as hiking.

Here are more interesting facts about the Reedy Creek Nature Center & Nature Preserve:

  • From 17545 to 1767, John Selwyn occupied the land because King George granted it to him.
  • In the late 1700s, the Robinson family bought the land and built the Robinson Rock House.
  • After the Robinson family had ownership of the land, various families, such as the McLaughlins and Norketts, purchased and divided the land for approximately 200 years.
  • The City of Charlotte purchased and established the Reedy Creek Park in 1981.
  • In 1991, the City and County Park & Recreation Departments merged, which led to Mecklenburg County owning the land.
  • In 1997, the land was divided into two parts: Reedy Creek Park, which consists of 125-acres, and Reedy Creek Nature Preserve, which is 832-acres.
  • There are over 100 types of birds and nearly 50 different species of other animals that live in the Reedy Creek Nature Preserve.
  • Visitors can explore the nature trails, which span across 10 miles. There are different preserve trails, each offering different scenery and geared toward a different level of difficulty.
  • Visitors are allowed to fish in the Dragonfly and Slider Ponds. It’s important to note that if you are 16-years-old or older, you are required to have a NC State Fishing License.
  • The Reedy Creek Park is next door, and offers various picnic shelters and tables, sport opportunities, restrooms, a playground, and a dog park.
